The Type 97 Chi-Ha was a Japanese medium tank that was developed in 1936 as a replacement for the Type 89 I-Go, which was too slow and poorly armed for modern warfare. It was based on the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, but with a larger hull, a four-man crew, and a 57 mm gun. It was the most widely produced Japanese medium tank of World War II, and saw service in China, Mongolia, and the Pacific. However, it was outmatched by Allied tanks such as the M4 Sherman and the Matilda.
In 1942, it was upgraded with a new turret and a 47 mm high-velocity gun, and renamed as the Type 97-Kai or Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha. In World of Tanks, the Type 97 Chi-Ha is a tier III light tank that has good mobility, accuracy, and gun depression. It can use either a 47 mm or a 57 mm gun, which have good penetration and rate of fire, but low alpha damage. It can scout or support from a distance, using its good gun depression and camouflage. However, it has poor armor, low alpha damage, and a large profile. It needs to avoid being detected and destroyed by higher-tier tanks.
