SU-76I | World of Tanks Best Replays

by iFacePalm

The SU-76I was a Soviet self-propelled gun that was created in 1943 on the basis of captured German StuG III and Pz.Kpfw. III vehicles. It was armed with a Soviet 76-mm F-34 gun, which was more powerful than the original German guns. The SU-76I was intended to provide infantry support and anti-tank fire, as well as to fill the gap in the Soviet production of self-propelled guns. The SU-76I was developed by the S.A. Ginzburg Design Bureau at factory 37 in Sverdlovsk. The design involved removing the German turret and superstructure, and replacing them with a fixed casemate with sloped armor and a gun mount. The crew consisted of four men: a commander, a gunner, a driver, and a loader. The vehicle had two GAZ-202 gasoline engines connected in parallel, which gave it good mobility and speed. The SU-76I also had a radio and an intercom system, which improved its communication and coordination with other units.

The SU-76I was put into service by a decree of the State Defense Committee (GKO) on December 2, 1942. A total of 200 vehicles were manufactured by November 1943, when the production was stopped. The reason for this was that the original SU-76 model, which was based on the T-70 light tank chassis, had been improved and became more reliable and easy to produce. The SU-76I also had some drawbacks, such as limited gun traverse, poor visibility for the driver, and high cost of conversion. The SU-76I saw combat action from spring 1943 until early spring 1944. It participated in the battle of Kursk, where it was attached to the 5th Guards and 13th Army of the Central Front. It also fought in other battles on the Western and Southern Fronts, as well as in Belarus and Ukraine. The SU-76I proved to be effective against German tanks and fortifications, but it also suffered heavy losses from enemy fire and mines. Some of the surviving vehicles were used for training purposes until the end of the war. The SU-76I was supposed to be replaced by the SU-85I, which was based on the German Panzer IV chassis, but this project was never realized.

In World of Tanks, the SU-76I is a tier 3 premium tank destroyer that has good firepower, mobility, and armor for its tier. It can deal high damage per minute with its fast-firing 76-mm gun, which has good penetration and accuracy. It can also move quickly and turn well, thanks to its two engines and torsion bar suspension. Its frontal armor is sloped and thick enough to bounce some shots from lower-tier enemies. However, the SU-76I also has some weaknesses, such as low hit points, poor gun depression and elevation, limited gun traverse, and weak side and rear armor. It also has low view range and signal range, which makes it vulnerable to enemy scouts and artillery. Therefore, the SU-76I should use its speed and camouflage to flank or ambush its opponents, while avoiding direct confrontation with higher-tier enemies or multiple enemies at once.
