The M6A2E1 was a further development of the T1 and M6 heavy tanks, which were designed by the US Army Ordnance Corps during World War II. The project started in August 1944, when the US Department of Ordnance decided to mount the turret of the Heavy Tank T29, which had a 105 mm gun, on an up-armored Heavy Tank M6A2 hull, which had a 76 mm and a 37 mm gun. The idea was to create a breakthrough tank that could deal with heavily fortified areas and enemy vehicles that were expected to be encountered in the advance into Europe.
The M6A2E1 had a larger turret ring, thicker frontal armor, and a more powerful engine than the M6A2. It also had a distinctive shape, with a protruding lower front plate and a massive turret, which earned it the nickname “Mutant” by the community. However, the M6A2E1 never saw mass production or combat. Only two prototypes were built and tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The project was canceled because General Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, rejected the idea of using heavy tanks in the war. He considered them impractical for transportation and maintenance. Moreover, by the time the M6A2E1 was developed, the US Army had already adopted the Medium Tank M26 Pershing, which had similar firepower and mobility but less weight and size. The M26 Pershing was more suitable for the European theater and saw action in the final stages of the war.
In World of Tanks, the M6A2E1 is a Tier VIII premium American heavy tank. It has several advantages and disadvantages compared to other tanks of its tier and class. The M6A2E1 is best played as a frontline brawler or a hull-down sniper, depending on the situation. It can use its strong frontal armor and high hit points to absorb damage and trade shots with enemies at close or medium range. It can also use its good gun depression and turret armor to hide behind cover and peek out to shoot at enemies at long range. However, it should avoid being flanked or surrounded by faster or more agile tanks, as it will have trouble turning or escaping. It should also avoid exposing its weak spots or engaging enemies with higher DPM or penetration than itself.
